Trader Joe’s frozen aisle gets most of the hype, but don’t head for the checkout just yet. Some of the best finds are tucked into the pantry, snack shelves, bakery and refrigerated cases—and a few are surprisingly easy to miss.
Prices and availability can vary by location.
1. Granola Butter

$5.49 for 12 ounces
Cookie Butter gets all the attention, but Trader Joe’s newest spread is building a following of its own. Granola Butter starts with rolled oats and gets its sweetness from maple syrup, brown sugar and vanilla, giving it a creamy texture and a flavor that lands somewhere between granola and graham crackers.
The easy move is toast, but sliced apples, bananas and yogurt may be even better. Shoppers have also been pairing it with Trader Joe’s Apple Cinnamon Sourdough, which sounds like a pretty convincing reason to keep a jar around.
2. Paneer Indian Style Cheese

$4.99 for 10 ounces
Trader Joe’s has sold paneer dishes from the freezer for years. Now you can finally grab the cheese itself from the refrigerated cheese case.
Paneer is mild and firm enough to grill, pan-fry or drop into a curry without melting away. Trader Joe’s had offered versions decades ago, but brought it back after increasing customer requests. This new Wisconsin-made version is now listed as an everyday item.
Cube it, brown the edges and add your favorite simmer sauce. Dinner is halfway done.
3. Honey Mustard Popcorn

$2.99 for 5 ounces
This is one of the newest bags worth noticing in the snack aisle.
The popcorn is popped with avocado oil and dusted with a sweet, tangy mustard seasoning. Early reactions have been strong, with shoppers comparing the flavor to honey mustard pretzel pieces and familiar honey mustard dipping sauces.
If honey mustard is already your favorite pretzel flavor, this one isn’t a hard sell.
4. Meringue Dessert Shells

$2.99 for 2.2 ounces
These don’t look particularly exciting sitting on the shelf. Then you realize Trader Joe’s has basically done the annoying part of making pavlova for you.
Fill the crisp meringue shells with whipped cream and berries, spoon in lemon curd or break them up for an easy Eton Mess-style dessert. A Reddit post announcing them this summer became one of the community’s bigger new-product discussions.
One thing to know before buying: these are crisp meringues, not soft, marshmallowy pavlova centers.
5. Greek Chickpeas With Parsley and Cumin

$2.79 for 9.88 ounces
This unassuming can continues to show up on underrated Trader Joe’s lists for a reason.
The chickpeas are already seasoned, so there’s no draining a boring can and figuring out what to do next. Add them to salads, grain bowls and pita plates, heat them with rice or crisp them up for extra texture. They were singled out again this week among Trader Joe’s most underrated buys.
Another smart trick: spoon them over hummus and let the seasoned oil do the rest.
6. Sweet Onion Style Pretzel Twists

$3.69 for 12 ounces
Trader Joe’s snack aisle is crowded enough that these can disappear into the background.
That would be a mistake if you like onion-heavy snacks. The twists balance savory onion seasoning with a touch of sweetness rather than going full sour-cream-and-onion chip.
Better yet, Trader Joe’s has said they’re an everyday product—not something you need to panic-buy before the season changes.
They also happen to be very good with cheese and dip nearby.
7. Sweet Chili Black-Eyed Pea Tempeh Chips

$3.49 for 3 ounces
Here’s the bag people are most likely to pick up just to figure out what exactly they’re looking at.
Instead of potatoes, corn or even traditional soybean tempeh, these chips start with fermented black-eyed peas. The finished snack is crunchy, a little hearty and seasoned with sweet chili, garlic and spice.
Recent reviews have been surprisingly positive, especially from shoppers looking for something different from another tortilla chip.
8. Zhoug Sauce

$3.49 for 8 ounces
The refrigerated sauce case may quietly be one of the best sections at Trader Joe’s, and Zhoug is a perfect example.
This bright green sauce brings cilantro, jalapeño, garlic, cardamom and cumin together with a serious kick. It recently landed on another food editor’s list of Trader Joe’s most underrated staples.
Spoon it onto eggs, chicken, falafel or roasted potatoes. Mixing a little into Greek yogurt also gives you a ridiculously easy dip.
9. Sliced Double Chocolate Brioche

$5.49 for 17.6 ounces
Walk too quickly through the bread section and you could miss one of Trader Joe’s more dangerous breakfast-dessert crossovers.
The soft brioche already has plenty of chocolate running through it, but the real trick is to toast a slice. The edges crisp, the chocolate warms and suddenly a loaf of bread feels much closer to dessert. The product remains listed in Trader Joe’s current September bakery lineup.
French toast is the obvious next step. Vanilla ice cream on a toasted slice works too.
10. Unexpected Cheddar Cheese Snackers

$4.99 for 8 individually wrapped pieces
Unexpected Cheddar itself is no secret. These little snack-size versions still fly much further under the radar.
They give you the familiar sharp cheddar-meets-aged-Parmesan flavor without opening a whole block. Toss one into a lunch bag, pair it with fruit or keep a few around for the moment when standing in front of the refrigerator somehow becomes dinner.
You do pay more per ounce for the individual portions, so this one is really about convenience.
11. Crunchy Chili Onion

$4.49 for 6 ounces
This jar has developed a following, but plenty of shoppers still walk straight past it looking for regular hot sauce.
Crunchy Chili Onion is less about scorching heat and more about texture—dried garlic, onion, peppers and chile flakes suspended in seasoned oil. Trader Joe’s currently lists it at $4.49 and suggests everything from burgers and pizza to pasta and eggs.
The grilled-cheese trick is especially good: put a little in the pan and cook the sandwich right in the crunchy oil.
12. Caro Sugo Datterino Cherry Tomatoes and Roasted Garlic Pasta Sauce

$5.49 for 24.3 ounces
This one has a little backstory.
The Datterino tomato sauce originally appeared as part of Trader Joe’s Italian pasta sauce trio. It stood out enough that the retailer brought it back in a larger standalone jar, built around sweet Datterino cherry tomatoes, roasted garlic, basil and onion.
It’s still showing up in current September pricing data, but this has been promoted as a limited-run product. If your store has it, I wouldn’t assume it will sit there forever.
13. Spicy Cheese Crunchies

$2.49 for 7 ounces
Fans waited for these to come back, and now they’re sitting in the snack aisle again for $2.49.
Think crunchy cheese snack first, chile heat second. Trader Joe’s described the spice as something that builds as you eat, with plenty of tangy cheese flavor underneath.
They’re good straight from the bag, but crushing a handful over mac and cheese is the sort of unnecessary decision I fully support.
14. Taco Seasoned Beef Stick

$1.99 for 1.15 ounces
This little snack could easily disappear among all the bars and jerky, but it has been popping up in September Trader Joe’s coverage.
It’s a portable beef stick seasoned with taco-style spices including cumin, chipotle and garlic. The Kitchn singled it out as one of September’s better new Trader Joe’s finds, especially for keeping in a bag or car when you need something more substantial than another handful of chips.
At $1.99, it’s also one of the cheaper experiments on this list.
15. Giant Baked Beans in Tomato Sauce

$2.29 for 9.6 ounces
Maybe the least flashy product here is also one of the most useful.
The oversized beans come in a savory tomato sauce and work straight from the can, warmed over toast, alongside eggs or tossed into pasta. A shopper post sharing different ways to use them picked up more than 700 Reddit upvotes earlier this year, and longtime Trader Joe’s shoppers continue to call them out as an inexpensive pantry staple.
For $2.29, this is exactly the kind of product that earns the phrase hidden gem.
