Dollar General quietly drops select clearance items to $0.01 (“penny items”) as they rotate inventory. The list below shows items recently spotted at penny across most of the country, sorted by how widespread the rotation is. New items are added every couple of days as our scans pick up fresh flips.
How to confirm an item is at penny
- Open the Dollar General app and tap the barcode-scan icon (top-right, or under Lists).
- Scan the item on the shelf — if it shows $0.01, it’s penny.
- Take it straight to the register. Don’t ask staff to price-check — they may pull it.

Full guide: how to find and verify penny items
- Download or update the Dollar General app (iOS / Android) before you head in. Make sure you’re on the latest version each Tuesday morning, when most penny flips go live.
- Open the in-app barcode scanner — tap the barcode icon in the upper-right of the app, or use the scanner under Lists. Scan the item’s UPC right on the shelf.
- If the price displayed is $0.01, you’ve found a penny item. If it shows the regular price, your store either hasn’t been flipped yet (some stores update on Wednesday) or the item has already been pulled.
- Take it directly to the register. Penny items aren’t always pulled from shelves yet. Most cashiers will honor the scanned price. Some stores may decline penny sales at staff discretion; that’s the trade-off with penny shopping.
- Don’t ask employees to price-check. Doing so gives them a chance to pull the item before you can buy it.
Penny pricing is not guaranteed at every location. What rings up at $0.01 in one store may not ring up at another, even on the same day. Always verify with the app scanner before checkout.
