At this time of year, many of us rely heavily on propane to heat our homes, operate our kitchen appliances, or heat up our hot water for showers and baths. If you live in a propane-powered home or RV, then you’re probably already somewhat familiar with the process of purchasing and exchanging propane tanks.
Walmart sells propane tanks from the following brands:
- Blue Rhino
- AmeriGas
- Coleman
- BernzOmatic
However, Coleman and BernzOmatic propane cylinders are not available for exchange at Walmart.
Walmart sells a variety of propane tank sizes, including 14-oz cylinders, 16-oz cylinders, 15-lb tanks, and 20-lb tanks. They also sell empty 5-lb tanks if you’re interested in filling a tank elsewhere.

How To Exchange Propane Tanks At Walmart
When purchasing propane at Walmart, you can do so in one of two ways–by purchasing a brand new tank or cylinder or by exchanging an empty tank for a full one. Exchanging a propane tank is typically about 30% less expensive than purchasing a new tank.
In order to take advantage of Walmart’s propane tank exchange option, you will need to supply your own empty 15- or 20-lb propane tank to initiate the exchange. You can also exchange multiple tanks at a time.
To exchange a propane tank at Walmart, follow these steps:
- Make sure that your tank holds between 15 and 20 lbs of propane when full (smaller or larger tanks cannot be exchanged at Walmart)
- Bring your empty propane tank to any Walmart location
- First, leave your tank(s) in your vehicle and head inside the store
- Visit any conventional register (with a cashier) and let the associate working there know that you would like to pay for a propane tank exchange (if you are exchanging multiple tanks, let them know how many individual tanks you would like to exchange)
- The associate will ring you up for the cost of your exchanges
- Once you have paid, you will be directed to meet another associate outside by the propane tank “cages”
- At this time, you will need to retrieve your empty propane tanks from your vehicle and carry them to the propane tank area
- The associate who arrives to help you will retrieve your empty tanks and supply you with fresh, full tanks (full tanks are identified by removable blue caps fitted over the hose fitting)
If you need to return an empty propane tank but do not wish to purchase any additional propane, you can simply leave your empty tanks by the propane tank exchange area in front of any Walmart location.
Cost
Exchanging a propane tank at Walmart currently costs $19.92 as of December 2022. This price is fixed regardless of what brand of tank you’re exchanging, as long as your tank holds between 15 and 20 lbs of propane when full.
Smaller or larger tanks are not available for exchange.
Keep in mind that this price is listed on Walmart.com, but prices may vary by region or store. According to several online sources, Walmart typically charges about $5 per gallon for propane exchange.
Does Walmart Refill Propane Tanks?
Unfortunately, Walmart does not refill propane tanks in 2022.
This is because propane tank refilling must be done by skilled professionals specifically trained to work with propane, a highly flammable gas. Walmart does not employ propane technicians.
Alternative Stores For Refilling Propane Tanks
Three popular places that offer propane tank refill services include U-Haul, Tractor Supply Co and some AmeriGas locations. However, AmeriGas only offers small propane cylinder refills while Tractor Supply and U-Haul offer refilling services for larger tanks as well.
If you have a propane tank larger than 20 lbs, the best way to have it refilled is to call a local propane company in your area.
Does Walmart Have Good Propane Tanks?
Walmart sells propane from top-tier brands like AmeriGas, Blue Rhino, and Coleman. These are among the most trusted brands for propane in the world, so you can rest assured that when you purchase propane at Walmart, you are purchasing a reliable and high-quality product.
