Is Trader Joe’s Olive Oil Legit?

Many extra-virgin oils sold in stores are adulterated, and customers may wonder if they are buying legit products or not.

Trader Joe’s has three legitimate olive oils: California Estate, Premium, and Greek Kalamata.  Since they are genuine, you will not need to worry about being duped. However, the other labels are adulterated.

Many people confuse pure and extra virgin olive oil and cannot tell the difference. Extra virgin oil (EVOO) is made from pure cold-pressed olives, while pure olive oil is a blend of processed and cold-pressed oils.

When making EVOO, olives are ground into a paste and pressed to extract the oil. No heat is involved; hence this method takes a lot of time.

Extra virgin oil is the highest grade olive oil in the market, and it has 100% purity and less than 0.08% free fatty acid content. On the other hand, pure olive oil, has at least 10% virgin oil and 3-4% oleic acid. It has a higher smoking point hence perfect for all-purpose cooking. It, however, has less flavor than the extra virgin oil.

  1. “Is Trader Joe’s olive oil organic?
Yes. Trader Joe’s olive oil is made from non-GMO ingredients; therefore, it is organic.”
This is incorrect. Please read up on basic definitions of non-GMO and organic, to be organically certified requires a whole host of other conditions, only one of which is non-GMO! In fact, only a few of the Trader Joe’s oils are organic (meaning, certified, meaning have an approved seal by an approved organic certifier)

  2. (and by the way, I agree that Trader Joe’s offers great and affordable olive oils, including their organic ones.)
