When I first set out to review Trader Joe’s Chocolate Hummus, I really wasn’t sure what to expect. Chocolate and hummus just aren’t two things I would ever imagine combining into one food, but I was open to being convinced.
I headed to my local TJ’s and started scanning the refrigerated aisles… but I found nothing. Then, I went to another Trader Joe’s a few towns over, determined to find a tub of this elusive dip. Unfortunately, I came up empty handed there as well.
This could have been explained by a simple lack of supply (or perhaps the overwhelming popularity of chocolate hummus?), but I had a nagging feeling that there was another reason why I couldn’t find this stuff on any TJ’s shelves.
Sure enough, when I got home and sat at my computer, I quickly discovered that my suspicions were true.
As of Spring 2022, Trader Joe’s has discontinued their Chocolate Hummus. At least, the product hasn’t been found on shelves since then, and it’s been listed on TraderJoes.com as “unavailable” for about seven months as this article is being written.
At this point, if Trader Joe’s Chocolate Hummus makes a comeback, I’ll be surprised.

Trader Joe’s Hummus Alternatives
Even though Trader Joe’s no longer sells their Chocolate Hummus, they still sell plenty of other hummus varieties to fulfill your savory dip cravings. Unfortunately, none of TJ’s other dips are sweet, so there really isn’t a good direct alternative for chocolate hummus at Trader Joe’s currently.
As of December 2022, Trader Joe’s still carries the following types of hummus:
They also sell other dips and spreads, including:
- Vegan Salmonesque Spread
- Maple Cranberry Orange Spread
- Vegan Buffalo Dip
- Eggplant Garlic Spread
- Organic Vegan Nacho Dip
- Organic Chunky Homestyle Guacamole
- Pimento Cheese Dip
- Everything and the Elote Greek Style Yogurt Dip
- Vegan Caramelized Onion Dip
- Vegan Tzatziki Dip
- Creamy Cauliflower Jalapeño Dip
- Buffalo Chicken Dip
Was Trader Joe’s Chocolate Hummus Good?
After doing a little research, it turns out I may have been wrong to judge chocolate hummus from the start.
According to a few users on Reddit, Trader Joe’s Chocolate Hummus was actually “unbelievably good” when it was still around:
Unfortunately, if you didn’t take the plunge into TJ’s chocolate hummus when it was available, you’ve probably lost your chance.
Trader Joe’s Chocolate Hummus was made primarily from chickpeas, cane sugar, and cocoa powder. It contained 50 calories in a 2-tbsp serving, and each serving also contained 5 grams of sugar. An 8-oz container of Trader Joe’s Chocolate Hummus was sold for just $1.99.
Where To Find Chocolate Hummus
Even though Trader Joe’s doesn’t sell chocolate hummus anymore, there are actually several other places that still produce this surprising treat.
Although no other brand has received quite the same rave reviews as the old TJ’s Chocolate Hummus, there are a few different options to try if you really need to satisfy that craving for a sweet, protein-rich spread.
Other brands that still sell chocolate hummus include:
- Boar’s Head
- Good & Gather
- Tribe
Boar’s Head is sold at most Kroger grocery stores, including QFC and Fred Meyer. You can also find Boar’s Head products at places like Target, Safeway, Amazon, and Alberston’s. Tribe brand is based in Chicago and sells their popular hummus products in grocery stores nationwide.
Good & Gather is a Target-owned brand available exclusively at Target and on Target.com. One of the most popular alternatives to Trader Joe’s Chocolate Hummus is the Brownie Batter Dessert Hummus available from Good & Gather. This decadent hummus sells for $3.49 for a 10-oz container and holds a 4.6 out of 5 star review on Target.com.
If you don’t find Good & Gather’s Chocolate Hummus at your local Target, try checking online to see if you can have the product delivered to your store from a different location.
Conclusion
Sadly, I had to be the bearer of bad news today for all you Trader Joe’s Chocolate Hummus fans out there. But not all hope is lost. There are still plenty of great chocolate hummus options available, so you’re sure to find an alternative at your favorite grocery store. Chocolate Hummus is best served as a dessert, paired with things like strawberries, pretzels, or ice cream. Even though it’s called “hummus” and made with chickpeas, chocolate hummus doesn’t pair nearly as well with savory foods. That said, if you’re hoping for a savory dip, then you can still find traditional hummus and plenty of other savory spreads at Trader Joe’s.
