10 Popular (and Unusual) Methods for Cleaning Baseboards

Cleaning baseboards might not be the most exciting chore, but it’s definitely one that makes a big difference in how clean your home feels. Over time, dust, dirt, and scuff marks can make your baseboards look pretty grimy. I’ve found some really effective and even a few unusual methods that can help you get those baseboards looking spotless. Whether you prefer traditional cleaning techniques or want to try something a bit different, there’s a method here for everyone.

Magic Eraser

Magic Erasers are known for their cleaning power on various surfaces, including baseboards. To use this method, take a fresh Magic Eraser, wet it, and squeeze out the excess water. Run the Magic Eraser over the baseboard, applying more pressure to areas with significant scuffing or dirt. Repeat the process until the baseboard is clean. This method is effective at picking up dust, dirt, and removing tougher marks and scuffs. However, it might fall short in harder-to-reach spots like corners and the angles where the baseboard meets the wall.

Cleaning Wipes

Cleaning wipes are a straightforward and effective way to clean baseboards. Simply pull a wipe from the container and clean a section of the baseboard from top to bottom. One wipe can cover a considerable length of the baseboard. These wipes are great for picking up dust and dirt and can be maneuvered into crevices with a fingernail. They can lift some dirt marks but are not effective against scuff marks. This method is convenient and quick, especially for routine cleaning.

Dryer Sheets

Using dryer sheets to clean baseboards is an unusual but effective method. Wipe the baseboards with a dryer sheet from top to bottom. The dryer sheet acts like an electrostatic dust cloth, attracting dust and dirt. It supposedly leaves behind a film that repels dust, keeping baseboards cleaner for longer. However, the strong scent of dryer sheets might be a downside for some. This method is simple and helps in reducing dust accumulation on the baseboards.

Broom

A handheld broom can be surprisingly effective for cleaning baseboards. Use the broom to sweep along the baseboards, applying pressure to remove dirt, dog fur, and dust. This method is quick and works well for routine dusting. However, it does not remove scuffs or dirt marks, and the dust is merely displaced, not lifted. This method is best used before vacuuming to pick up the displaced dirt.

Vacuum Cleaner with Brush Attachment

Attach the brush tool to your vacuum cleaner and run it along the baseboards. This method is excellent for removing dust, dirt, and pet hair without having to bend over. The brush attachment helps reach into crevices and corners effectively. Vacuuming is less labor-intensive and provides a thorough clean, especially for baseboards that gather a lot of dust and hair. It is an efficient way to keep your baseboards clean regularly.

Sponge and Soapy Water

Fill a bucket with warm water and add a few drops of dish soap. Dip a sponge into the soapy water, wring it out, and wipe down the baseboards. This method is effective for removing grime and stains. Rinse the sponge frequently and change the water when it becomes dirty. For stubborn spots, you might need to scrub a little harder. This method leaves the baseboards clean and refreshed, although it requires some physical effort.

Toothbrush and Vinegar Solution

Mix equal parts of water and white vinegar in a spray bottle. Spray the solution on the baseboards and use an old toothbrush to scrub the crevices and detailed areas. This method is excellent for deep cleaning and removing stuck-on grime. Vinegar is a natural cleaner that breaks down dirt and disinfects. After scrubbing, wipe the baseboards with a damp cloth to remove any residue. This method is thorough but can be time-consuming.

Steam Cleaner

Using a steam cleaner is an efficient and chemical-free way to clean baseboards. Attach the small nozzle or brush attachment to the steam cleaner and run it along the baseboards. The steam loosens dirt and grime, which can then be wiped away with a microfiber cloth. This method sanitizes and cleans at the same time. It is effective for heavy-duty cleaning and leaves the baseboards looking pristine. However, steam cleaners can be expensive and require careful handling.

Cotton Swabs and All-Purpose Cleaner

Spray an all-purpose cleaner onto the baseboards and use cotton swabs to clean the intricate areas and corners. This method allows for precise cleaning in hard-to-reach spots. Cotton swabs are perfect for detailed cleaning around decorative trims and edges. After cleaning with the swabs, wipe the baseboards with a microfiber cloth to remove any remaining dirt and cleaner. This method is detailed and time-consuming but ensures a thorough clean.

Microfiber Cloth with Wood Polish

For wooden baseboards, use a microfiber cloth and wood polish. Spray the polish onto the cloth and wipe down the baseboards. This method cleans and polishes the wood, restoring its shine and protecting it from future dust accumulation. Microfiber cloths are effective at picking up dust and dirt without scratching the surface. This method not only cleans but also enhances the appearance of wooden baseboards, making them look well-maintained.
