Types of Pretzels at Trader Joe’s

As of February 2023, Trader Joe’s carries the following pretzel products…

They also carry a product called Step Up to the Snack Bar Mix which contains honey mustard pretzel pieces. However, this product is seasonal and released only around the holidays each year. Despite some calls from fans, TJ’s has not yet released the honey mustard pretzel pieces as its own product.

Back in the day, TJ’s also carried a popular soft pretzel in their frozen section which could be baked at home. Unfortunately, Trader Joe’s discontinued their frozen soft pretzels in 2022 to the disappointment of many fans. These were a popular snack to pop into the air fryer or even the microwave, but now you’ll have to source your soft pretzels elsewhere. You can still buy frozen soft pretzels from companies like Auntie Anne’s and Superpretzel when you shop at Safeway or Walmart.

Vegan Options

TJ’s has five vegan pretzel options as of February 2023…

  • Thin & Crunchy Pretzel Slims
  • Honey Wheat Pretzel Sticks
  • Gluten-Free Pretzel Twists
  • Almond Butter Filled Pretzel Nuggets
  • Peanut Butter Filled Pretzel Nuggets

Gluten-Free Options

Currently, Trader Joe’s only offers one gluten-free pretzel variety–their Gluten-Free Pretzel Twists, which cost $2.99 per bag.

Where To Find TJ’s Pretzels

Most of TJ’s pretzels are stocked in the snack aisle near the chips and crackers. However, you might have to search through other parts of the store to find every variety.

At my TJ’s, most of the dessert pretzels are kept in the frozen foods aisle above the coolers.

You’ll find these chocolate-covered pretzels in the same place where you’ll find the chocolate bars, chocolate chips, and bins of cookies.

My Review

While I definitely haven’t tried all of Trader Joe’s pretzel varieties (has anyone?), I’ve tried a few. And I’m here to give you my honest opinion.

First off, while I love peanut butter-filled pretzels, I try my best to avoid non-organic peanut products. This is because conventionally grown peanuts contain some of the highest concentrations of pesticides of any food we consume.

Keeping this in mind, I have tried the following pretzels from Trader Joe’s…

  • Almond Butter Filled Pretzels
  • Dark Chocolate Covered Almond Butter Filled Pretzels
  • Dark Chocolate Covered Mini Pretzels

I really wanted to love the Dark Chocolate Covered Almond Butter Filled Pretzels. After all, what’s not to love? But unfortunately, I thought they fell a little flat. The chocolate coating is great–super rich and flavorful–but the pretzel inside isn’t salty enough and the flavor of the almond butter ends up paling in comparison to the chocolate. I think they could be improved by a thinner chocolate coating with more salt on the pretzel before it’s coated. That said, they’re definitely not bad. They’re just not going to blow anyone’s mind.

As far as a classic and simple snack goes, I think TJ’s Dark Chocolate Covered Mini Pretzels are perfect. The chocolate is dark, rich, and flavorful, and the pretzels underneath are perfectly crisp and tasty. I like these better than the milk chocolate variety because the flavor is richer, which is perfect for major chocolate fans like me.

But to me, these will always be the GOAT…

Pretzels at Trader Joe's Opening

Trader Joe’s Almond Butter Filled Pretzels are… addictive, to say the least. I have to limit how often I let myself buy a bag, because I really can’t control myself once they’re open.

I love how salty they are, with big coarse pieces of salt coating each nugget. They’re also quite big, and each pretzel is stuffed full of almond butter. Some of them are even overflowing with filling, so you know TJ’s definitely isn’t skimping on ingredients. In fact, each bag weighs 12 whole ounces, compared to just eight ounces from their dark chocolate-covered counterparts.

If you’re a fan of salty, sweet, crunchy snacks, you have got to try these pretzels. I promise, you will not regret it. (Unless you can’t eat gluten–in which case, avoid!)
