Does USPS Deliver On Sundays?
Whether or not you’re a Harry Potter fan, you’ve probably heard the phrase “no post on Sundays.” But is this always true?
In the case of the United States Postal Service, the answer is usually yes. However, there are a number of exceptions to this rule.
How To Get USPS To Deliver on Sundays
One way to guarantee your USPS packages will be delivered on Sundays is by shipping with Priority Mail Express. Priority Express is the fastest (and most expensive) shipping option offered by USPS, guaranteeing same-day and next-day deliveries seven days a week and 365 days a year. It’s important to note, though, that you have to request Sunday or holiday delivery at the time of shipping, which comes at an added cost on top of the standard rate for Priority Mail Express.
USPS also offers Sunday delivery for certain packages sent via Amazon.
During the holiday season, USPS also delivers regular packages on Sundays in major cities and high-volume mail locations. However, this does not mean that all packages awaiting delivery will be delivered on Sundays in those areas. USPS expands Sunday deliveries during the holiday season to “keep the network clear and moving,” meaning that they will only deliver as many packages as they need to keep the system from getting backed up.

Other Benefits of Using USPS Priority Mail Express
Shipping with Priority Mail Express isn’t just a helpful tool when you need to have a package delivered on a Sunday. It also comes with a wide range of benefits that you can’t access through other USPS shipping options.
The benefits of shipping with USPS Priority Mail Express include…
- Guaranteed same-day and next-day shipping
- Deliveries on Sundays and holidays (requires an added fee)
- Expedited shipping and tracking information
- Money-back guarantee for failed or late deliveries
- Free package pickup (so you don’t have to drop off your packages at the post office)
- Optional proof-of-delivery signature included in the price of shipping
Priority Mail Express is generally about 3x to 3.5x more expensive than Priority Mail. Even just for local deliveries, prices start at about $28 per package.
FAQs
Can you pick up a package from USPS before delivery on Sunday?
In some cases, yes. However, you have to request a special service in order to do this. You unfortunately can’t just show up at the post office and request your package if it’s still technically in transit.
USPS offers two services that can enable you to pick up a package at a post office rather than waiting for it to be delivered after the weekend. These services are Package Intercept and Hold Mail.
Hold Mail is a free service that impacts all of the packages and pieces of mail bound for your address. It’s commonly used by people who are going on vacation, allowing you to pick up all of your mail at the post office when you return. Technically, you could use this service to be able to pick up your mail on a Saturday. You can request a mail hold until 3AM on the morning of the day you want your mail held.
Package Intercept, on the other hand, is a paid service used to stop the delivery of a single package.
Does USPS deliver first-class packages on Sundays?
No. First-Class Mail is considered the lowest priority shipping service for packages through USPS and does not get delivered on Sundays.
Can you overnight a package on Saturday for Sunday delivery?
Yes. Using USPS Priority Mail Express, you can send a package for next-day delivery through USPS, even if the delivery day is a Sunday. However, you will need to request and pay an additional fee for Sunday delivery.
Does USPS deliver on a Sunday holiday?
Yes. For Priority Mail Express customers, USPS will deliver any day of the year, including Sundays and holidays, for an additional fee.
