Unfortunately, while Target Optical accepts insurance from a long list of providers, they do not list VSP Vision Care on their list of accepted vision insurance plans.
Because it’s a common question, we also checked to see if CVS accepts VSP, but as far as we can tell, Aetna is the only insurance provider currently accepted by CVS Pharmacy for contact lenses.
But while VSP is not one of Target Optical’s designated insurance providers, that doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to use VSP to access vision care through Target.
If you are a VSP customer and you would like to use Target Optical as your vision care provider, then your insurance will have to be billed separately as an out-of-network provider.

How To Use VSP At Target Optical?
Here are the instructions provided by Target Optical to their VSP-insured customers:
To use your VSP insurance for products and services accessed through Target Optical, all you have to do is call 1-877-848-8476 and allow a Target Optical customer service representative to process your out-of-network order.
For all other out-of-network providers, you will need to self-submit a claim to your insurance company to be reimbursed. Check with your insurance company to find out how to submit an out-of-network claim.
What Is Covered In Target Optical Insurance?
Although Target Optical provides vision care products and services, they do not provide their own vision insurance.
With your separate insurance, the kinds of services you can expect to find through Target Optical include:
- Eye exams
- Prescription glasses
- Contact lenses
- Sunglasses
What is covered through your insurance will vary based on your plan. You can check your insurance eligibility using Target Optical’s insurance tool on their website. Simply visit Target Optical’s website, then click on “Insurance” toward the upper right corner. Then, enter your details to find out what will be covered.
Target Optical does offer a limited Worry-Free Protection Plan for glasses purchased from them. However, the terms of this policy do not include lost glasses. You can read all about Target’s Worry-Free Protection Plan here.
How Much Does VSP Cover For Glasses At Target?
The amount that VSP will cover for your glasses purchased at Target Optical will vary depending on your specific plan. If the glasses you purchase do not exceed your VSP frame allowance, then your insurance will cover the entire purchase. Check out VSP’s Frame Allowance FAQs to find out exactly what you can expect.
Prescription lenses at Target range in price from $75 to $150. Frame prices vary by brand and style, starting at about $70. Right now, Target Optical is offering a complete pair promo for $79, which includes lenses and select frames.

Target Optical Reviews
Of course, every Target Optical center will vary in terms of customer service, but customers seem to be happy overall with the services, care, and products they receive through Target Optical. (Remember that the Target Corporation does not provide vision care services or employ on-staff optometrists. All optometrists working through Target Optical are independent medical providers contracting through the Target Optical network.)
Here are some real customer reviews from my local Target Optical center to give you an idea of what to expect:
FAQs
Does Target Optical accept walk-ins?
This depends. All Target Optical optometrists are independent practitioners, so their policies will vary by location. To find out whether your local Target Optical accepts walk-ins, give them a call to find out. You can also schedule an eye exam online here.
Do you need insurance for Target Optical?
No. You can pay out of pocket for goods and services accessed through Target Optical.
What is the warranty period for Target Optical glasses?
This depends. If you purchased protection through Target’s Worry-Free Protection Plan, then you will have protection for 1 year. Target will also repair or replace glasses due to breakdowns that are not covered by other policies or warranties. If you are having issues with your glasses within 90 days of purchase, you will be covered under Target Optical’s 100% satisfaction guarantee return policy.
How long does it take to get glasses from Target Optical?
Prescription glasses purchased through Target Optical will typically require a 7-day processing period before the customer receives them, as they are custom made. Non-prescription glasses will arrive sooner.
Conclusion
If you’re a VSP Vision Care customer using Target Optical for your vision care needs, you will be able to rely on Target Optical’s customer service representatives to help you bill your insurance as an out-of-network provider. Target Optical accepts a long list of in-network providers if you’re interested in switching. You can also use Target Optical if you don’t have insurance by paying out of pocket for their reasonably priced eye care services and products.
